General Searching

There are usually two types of search options when using a database - basic and advanced.

Basic searches all fields in a record; title, full text, abstract, author, etc., or you may select a specific field for your search.

Advanced searches all fields, but you may select a specific field to search, such as title. This search mode allows you to be more specific in your searching criteria, grouping multiple terms together, as well as narrowing down a date range to months and years.

Terminology

Be aware of the search terms you use. Try to use unique terms associated with your topic or program. There may be multiple ways of searching, such as using the indexing language - terms indexers assign to articles to describe them. These terms are often linked in the abstract of an article so always watch for linked text and/or subjects that can be used to finetune your search. Authors' names and publishers are often linked also.

H. W. Wilson

Use this database to locate articles in newspapers and magazines, usually available in full text. Good for current events and recent history for a wide variety of topics. See this comprehensive guide to using and making the most of H. W. Wilson [pdf].

Proquest Bundle

Also, use this database to locate full-text articles in newspapers and  magazines. Includes Proquest Research Library, ABI Complete, National Newspapers 27, and Proquest Psychology. Works much like H.W. Wilson and may provide articles in magazines/newspapers not available in H. W. Wilson or eLibrary, and vice-versa.

eLibrary

Yet another source for locating full-text articles in newspapers and  magazines. May provide articles in magazines/newspapers not available in H. W. Wilson or Proquest and vice-versa. Also good for current events and recent history for a wide variety of topics. See this comprehensive guide to using and making the most of eLibrary [pdf].
